Storying
Bible Storying is the generic term for the primary use of Bible stories
to evangelize, disciple, plant churches and train emerging oral church
leaders. The term evolved from roots in Chronological Bible Teaching
which focused mainly on the chronological organization of teaching beginning
with key Old Testament passages leading to the Gospel accounts. This led to
a further focus on the value and role of the Bible stories themselves being
told along with appropriate teaching activities. This was then called
Chronological Bible Storying to highlight a focus on the value of the told
story both as a resource to teach from and for the benefit of learning by
the listeners. Over time many variations and strategies subsequently evolved
which then led to the use of the more generic term inclusive term Bible
Storying. One motto might be: If you aren’t telling and teaching the
stories, then it isn’t Bible Storying!

J.O.Terry
served under the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention
as media missionary to the Philippines beginning in 1968 and later serving as
the Asia-Pacific Region media consultant until retirement in 2003. Experience
with Chronological Bible Teaching in early 1988 soon led to a need for greater
emphasis on teaching the Bible stories along with appropriate learning
activities for nonliterate peoples. In an effort to supply this need, Terry
developed a number of widely used Bible story sets and led workshops and
conferences in many countries. He is convinced that Bible storying methods can be effective in winning the lost to Christ, in developing
the saved in Christ, in starting new churches among the peoples of the world,
and in training their oral leaders.
Presently J. O. Terry serves as publisher of the Bible Storying Newsletter
and the Journal of Bible Storying. He continues to teach Bible storying and
shares his experience with others in the ministry. Terry has authored and
co-authored several books:
- Basic Bible Storying
- Bible
Storying for Church Planting
- Bible
Storying Handbook for Short-Term Mission Teams and Mission Volunteers
- The Hope Stories from the Bible
